American-Israeli conductor Steven Sloane, originally from Los Angeles, is an internationally renowned musician. A student of Eugene Ormandy, Franco Ferrara and Gary Bertini, he served as music director of the Spoleto Festival and was artistic director of Opera North in Leeds. He has also been music director of the American Composers Orchestra and principal conductor of the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra (2007-2013). Steven Sloane has guest conducted many prestigious orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony, Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, hr-Sinfonieorchester, Philharmonia Orchestra London, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna, São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, China Philharmonic Orchestra and Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

The 2014/15 season marked Steven Sloane’s 20th anniversary with the Bochumer Symphoniker. Under his direction, the ensemble has been transformed into one of Germany’s leading orchestras and is due to move into its own new music centre in 2016. As a member of the artistic board of the European Capital of Culture RUHR 2010, his projects brought international recognition to arts in the Ruhr region. His commitment to the Bochumer Symphoniker and to the region has repeatedly been acknowledged. Already in 2006, the milestone production of Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s opera Die Soldaten was a great success for Steven Sloane and the Bochumer Symphoniker at the Ruhrtriennale, followed by acclaimed performances at the Lincoln Center Festival in 2008.

Steven Sloane is a sought-after opera conductor, whose engagements have taken him to the Royal Opera House Covent Garden (Nozze di Figaro), Los Angeles Opera (Goldenthal: Grendel), San Francisco Opera (Wallace: Bonesetter’s Daughter), Brooklyn Academy of Music (Turnage: Anna Nicole), Seattle Opera (Carmen), Dutch National Opera (De Raaff: Waiting for Miss Monroe), Houston Grand Opera (The Makropulos Case, The Magic Flute), Welsh National Opera (Iphigenia in Tauris), Stuttgart (Macbeth), as well as to festivals in Hong Kong (Salome), Santa Fe (Katja Kabanova), Edinburgh (Genoveva) and Salzburg (Feldman: Neither). Recent highlights include a new production of The Love for Three Oranges at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Madama Butterfly at the Copenhagen Opera, as well as the pairing of Duke Bluebeard's Castle and Dido and Aeneas at the Frankfurt and L.A. Opera. In the 2015/16 season, Steven Sloane will make his debut at the Grand Théâtre de Genève with a new production of Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and will conduct Così fan tutte at the Copenhagen Opera Festival.

Education and promoting young musicians have always been of great importance to Steven Sloane; he has regularly conducted youth orchestras such as the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, Bundesjugendorchester and Young Israel Philharmonic, and fostered the training of young conductors. He initiates master classes and academies, and is realising his vision of an international conducting academy at the Universität der Künste in Berlin, where he has been professor since 2013, where he has established the International Conducting Academy Berlin (ICAB).
