Described by Süddeutsche Zeitung as “the master singer who achieves miracles,” Dutch tenor Marcel Beekman is internationally acclaimed for his interpretations of operatic character roles and his versatility across early, contemporary, and avant-garde repertoire. For his portrayal of the title role in Rameau’s Platée at State Opera Prague, he was awarded first prize in the category Best Male Performance at the Cenie Thálie 2025.

Marcel Beekman opens the 2026/27 season as Linfea and La Natura in Cavalli’s La Calisto at Theater an der Wien, before reprising these roles at the Staatsoper Berlin in the same production. He returns to the Staatsoper Berlin during the season as Don Curzio in Le nozze di Figaro and Nutrice in L’incoronazione di Poppea.

Further engagements in 2026/27 include returns to Prague as Platée, and to the Opéra national de Paris as Shabby Peasant in a new production of Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. He will also perform the role of Licco in Cavalli’s Ercole Amante at the Opéra de Dijon and in concerts with Cappella Mediterranea and Leonardo García Alarcón. Marcel Beekman concludes the season with a return to the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence.

Most recent highlights include Falsacappa/Les Brigands and Licco/Ercole Amante by Antonia Bembo (both at Opéra national de Paris), the title role in Platée (Staatsoper Stuttgart), Atrea/Pompeo Magno (Bayreuth Baroque Festival) Iro/Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria (Festival d’Aix-en-Provence), Comte Hauk-Sendorf/Věc Makropulos (Opéra de Lyon), several parts in Unsuk Chin’s Alice in Wonderland  (Theater an der Wien) and roles in world premieres such as Teufel in David Lang’s Dora (Oper Stuttgart) and Mr. Jones in Alexander Raskatov’s Animal Farm (De Nationale Opera). Beekman is also celebrated for his portrayals of Nutrice/Arnalta in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea (Teatro del Liceu Barcelona, Nederlands Reisopera), Bababeck in Offenbach’s Barkouf (Opernhaus Zurich) and Hoffmann’s fantastical alter egos in Les Contes d’Hoffmann (Palau de les Arts Valencia).

He collaborates with leading conductors including Sir Simon Rattle, Iván Fischer, William Christie, Frans Brüggen, Christophe Rousset, Richard Egarr, Reinhard Goebel, Daniele Gatti, Sir Mark Elder, Edward Gardner, Claus Peter Flor, Steven Sloane, Reinbert de Leeuw, Sylvain Cambreling, John Adams, Marc Albrecht, Giampaolo Bisanti, Karina Canellakis and orchestras and ensembles such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Berliner Philharmoniker, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Het Residentie Orkest, Orchestre National de Lille, Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, Helsinki Baroque and Les Arts Florissants.

Marcel Beekman has performed on many of the world’s leading stages, including the Salzburger Osterfestspiele and Salzburger Festspiele, Opéra Comique in Paris, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Théâtre du Capitole Toulouse, Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg, the Bregenzer Festspiele, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall New York and in productions by visionary directors such as Robert Carsen, Pierre Audi, Barrie Kosky, Calixto Bieito, Ivo van Hove, Claus Guth, Stefan Herheim, Tatjana Gürbaca, Hal Hartley and Katie Mitchell.

His extensive discography includes Theatre of the World with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra (Nonesuch), which was nominated for a BBC Music Magazine Award in 2018, and Krzysztof Warlikowski’s production of Wozzeck for De Nationale Opera (Naxos). His acclaimed performance in the title role of Rameau’s Platée, in Robert Carsen’s celebrated production for Theater an der Wien conducted by William Christie is available on CD (Harmonia Mundi) and DVD (Unitel).
