Biography
Mezzo-soprano Rachel Frenkel is a regular guest of international opera and concert stages, especially as an interpreter of Mozart and Rossini. She has performed her signature-role of Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro at the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, the Wiener Staatsoper, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, with Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Budapest Festival Orchestra and at the Edinburgh International Festival and Mostly Mozart Festival New York.Highlights in 2023/24 include her return to La Scala di Milano in the role of Marcelline/Le nozze di Figaro, Edward Elgar’s Sea Pictures with the Würtembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen as well as Dorabella/Cosi fan tutte with the Orchestre national de Lyon.
Most recent opera engagements include house debuts as Cherubino at Opéra national de Paris and as Komponist/Ariadne auf Naxos at La Scala di Milano, Olga/Eugene Onegin and Isabella/Italiana in Algeri (New Israeli Opera), Idamante/Idomeneo (Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Opéra de Lille) and Sesto/La Clemenza di Tito (Théâtre du Capitole Toulouse).
A former ensemble member of Staatsoper Wien, she has appeared there as Komponist/Ariadne auf Naxos, Angelina/La Cenerentola, Rosina/Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Fenena/Nabucco, Stephano/Romeo et Juliette, Wellgunde/Das Rheingold and Götterdämmerung, Siébel/Faust, Ascanio/Les Troyens, Ruggiero/Alcina, Idamante/Idomeneo, Lea/Die Weiden by Johannes Maria Staud and Hermia/A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Guest appearances have led her to Staatsoper Berlin, Semperoper Dresden, Staatsoper Hamburg, Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse, Osterfestspiele Salzburg, Salzburger Festspiele, Bregenzer Festspiele and Glyndebourne Festival working with conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, Christian Thielemann, Ivor Bolton, Iván Fischer, Gustavo Dudamel, Marc Minkowski, Ingo Metzmacher, Simone Young, Thomas Hengelbrock, Emmanuelle Haïm and Robin Ticciati.
Equally sought-after on the concert stage, she has sung Berlioz Les nuits d´été with the Jerusalem Symphony, Bernstein’s Symphony no 1 with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig and Omer Meir Wellber, Berlioz’ Les nuits d´été with the Jerusalem Symphony, works by Robert Schumann with Choeur Accentus in Paris and Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, Beethoven‘s Missa Solemnis with Concerto Köln and Kent Nagano, Beethoven’s Mass in C with the BBC Philharmonic under Omer Meir Wellber, Bernstein’s Songfest with the MDR Sinfonieorchester Leipzig, Bach’s Magnificat with the Berliner Philharmoniker, conducted by Ton Koopman, Vivaldi’s Stabat Mater with Camerata Salzburg, Bernstein’s Symphony no 1 with the NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo and the Tonhalle-Gesellschaft Zürich, Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle with the Flemish Radio Choir and Hervé Niquet at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Mahler’s Rückert- Lieder with the Japan Century Symphony Orchestra and Mallika in Delibes’ Lakmé with the BR Rundfunkorchester Munich. She has also appeared with all major Israeli orchestras in a variety of repertoire from the baroque to the 20th century.
Ms Frenkel graduated at the Buchmann- Mehta School of Music in Tel Aviv, participated in the New Israeli Opera Young Artist Program and is a former studio member of the Staatsoper Berlin.
