Biography
Carlos Wagner was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela. After completing his studies in acting at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, he worked as an actor on both stage and screen. A pivotal encounter with Ruth Berghaus in Berlin during a masterclass led him to dedicate himself entirely to stage direction — a decision that has since shaped an internationally recognized career in both opera and theatre.

In the 2025/26 season, Carlos Wagner will present a new production of Puccini’s Manon Lescaut at Oper Köln, as well as Verdi’s Rigoletto at Theater Regensburg. These new stagings follow a string of recent successes, including Sweeney Todd at the Saarländisches Staatstheater in Saarbrücken, Handel’s Rodelinda at Oper Kiel, and the world premiere of La bella Susona by Alberto Carretero, which debuted at Teatro de la Maestranza in Sevilla and was later reprised for Opera Tenerife.

His recent work also includes Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder by Bertolt Brecht at Theater Kiel, Jörg Widmann’s Das Gesicht im Spiegel at Neue Oper Wien, Iolanta at Oper Kiel, and Ottone at the Internationale Händel-Festspiele Karlsruhe. He has staged Notre Dame by Franz Schmidt for the St. Gallen Festspiele, Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno at Theater Mainz, Puccini’s Il trittico at Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck, and Cecilia Valdés at Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid. Carlos Wagner also directed Götterdämmerung and Siegfried for Ópera de Oviedo, Lotario for both the Internationale Händel-Festspiele Göttingen and Theater Bern, and Peter Eötvös’ Angels in America at Theater Münster, alongside Julie & Jean for Neue Oper Wien.
